DURHAM, N.C. (WITN) - A New Bern college student has been identified as the man shot a week ago in Durham by a security guard.
Durham police say 23-year-old DeAndre Ballard, who was a student at North Carolina Central University, died after a shooting in an off-campus apartment complex on East Cornwallis Road.
Ballard, a senior physical education major, was a graduate of New Bern High School.
Authorities say the security guard workes for the NC Detective Agency and the company says its employee shot Ballard in self-defense.
NCCU says Ballard was a member of the university's Bon Vivant Fashion Society and served as Mr. Bon Vidant Fashion Society during the last school year.
Durham police list Ballard's shooting as a death investigation and haven't released any more information on it.
