Police ID construction worker killed in New Bern

NEW BERN, NC (WITN) Police have identified a construction worker killed in Monday's workplace accident in New Bern.

Asuncion Rodriquez, 51, was killed when a construction roller tipped over.

Authorities have not said if the Chocowinity man was operating the machinery or was nearby when it happened.

The fatality occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the new State Employees Credit Union that is being built on Elizabeth Avenue.

The state Department of Labor is investigating the workplace fatality.

The state Department of Labor is investigating a deadly workplace accident that happened Monday afternoon in New Bern.

Police say around 4:30 p.m. they were called to a construction site at the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and Sheryl Drive. That's where they're building a new State Employees Credit Union.

The labor department would only say a roller overturned and killed the employee of RB Group, which is a general contractor in Trent Woods.

The state agency couldn't say if the employee was operating the machinery, or just happened to be nearby when it tipped over.

Police have yet to release the name of the victim.

New Bern Police say they are investigating a fatal workplace accident that happened Monday afternoon.

Around 4:37 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue, and Sheryl Drive, in reference to a workplace accident.

Upon arrival, officers were advised that there was a workplace accident, which resulted in a fatality.

Video WITN shot of the scene shows the incident happened at a construction site.

The victim’s identity is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
