Nearly 30,000 baby chickens perish in Duplin County fire

DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WITN) - Nearly 30,000 baby chickens died in a fire in Duplin County Tuesday evening.

County fire marshal Ricky Deaver says the fire on Paul Ed Dale Road outside of Kenansville was reported around 5:00 p.m.

The first firefighters found the large chicken house on fire with heavy fire and smoke visible.

Four volunteer departments had to shuttle water in by tankers and brought the blaze under control about 90 minutes later.

Deaver said the chicks were just nine days old. He said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
