Nash Sheriff: Man shoots and kills himself following chase

NASH COUNTY, NC (WITN) The Nash County Sheriff's Office says a man involved in a police chase Monday night ended up shooting and killing himself.

Authorities say Rodney Silver had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, one for armed robbery and one for failure to notify an address change for a sex offender.

The sheriff's office also says the gun had been reported stolen.

The incident started around 8:30 p.m. with NC Highway Patrol involved in a vehicle pursuit on US 301 in Rocky Mount.

Highway Patrol discontinued the chase due to heavy rains and Silver's high rate of speed in inclement weather.

About 15 minutes later, the Nash County Sheriff's Office was notified of a vehicle wreck on North Browntown Road. Witnesses to the wreck notified 911 and gave a vehicle description and license plate, which came back to the same vehicle involved in the chase.

As Deputies were headed to the area, Silver was able to leave the scene of the accident and drive off even though his vehicle suffered heavy damage.

A few minutes later, the sheriff's office was notified that the vehicle was on NC 43 near Jernigan's Food Store driving very slowly. Deputies arrived on the scene and attempted to stop the driver of the vehicle. That's when they say the driver exited the vehicle, walked to the front of his vehicle, pulled out a handgun and shot himself in the head.

No shots were fired at any deputies, and no deputies fired their weapons.
