RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) - The number of flu deaths continues to rise in our state.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services says 27 more people died last week bringing the total deaths so far this season to 200.
This is the sixth straight week in which more than 10 people have died from the virus.
However, the department's report also says overall cases of influenza-like illness decreased last week.
The vast majority of those who have died this season are over the age of 65, with the next largest age group at 50-64 years old.
Last season, 218 people died from influenza.
