April is 'Safe Digging' Month and North Carolina 811 is reminding everyone to call before you dig.

North Carolina 811 is a non-profit organization funded by its member facilities.

The phone line provides an easy communication link between excavators -- including private citizens doing basic landscaping -- and utility owners.

When you call 811, employees will ask for location information about where you're planning to dig. NC 811 then notifies the service providers and if there is an underground cable, gas, phone or any other kind of line it will be marked with small flags so that the area can be avoided.

The service is completely free to use.

April is National Safe Digging Month.
