MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) - Police officers for one department here in the east will have a new piece of equipment while they're on duty.
Their goal is that it will help promote transparency and trust within the community.
The new piece of equipment will be on the officer's front pocket of their uniform. Morehead City police officers will start wearing body cameras in the next few weeks.
Police say they hope the addition will help promote legitimacy and transparency within the department, but will also help to strengthen the trust from the public.
Morehead City council approved this purchase in the 2019-2020 budget. Often times body cameras help officers go back and use the footage during an investigation and also to potentially back up their claims if necessary.
According to North Carolina General Statute, body cam footage is not public record, but there are certain circumstances where footage might be disclosed.
