There is a new interim chancellor at East Carolina University.

Dr. Ron Mitchelson, who had been acting chancellor, was named interim chancellor at the university.

Mitchelson was named acting chancellor on September 30th when Dan Gerlach was put on administrative leave.

Gerlach resigned on Saturday after new videos were given to UNC System investigators of him in downtown Greenville. He had been suspended since other videos surfaced last month that showed him drinking and dancing in bars frequented by students.

Mitchelson came to ECU in 1999 and has served as provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs since 2015.

“My 20 years at ECU have been, by far, the most rewarding years of my life,” he said. “The university has afforded me so many opportunities to grow as an educator and as a leader.

He was named interim chancellor by UNC System interim president Bill Roper and will head the university until a permanent chancellor is appointed.

After his appointment, Mitchelson told WITN News that he does not plan to apply for the permanent chancellor's position.
