Mayor: Greenville-Pitt County tourism numbers increasing

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - One part of our area saw a solid boost in tourism last year.

Greenville Mayor P.J. Connelly says the 2018 tourism numbers came in at $260 million, which is an increase of more than five and a half percent from 2017.

More than 2,300 people were directly employed in the travel and tourism industry in Pitt County, and the industry generated almost $55 million in total payroll.

Sales and excise tax, along with tax on personal and corporate income generated about $13.5 million in state tax revenue.

Connelly says Pitt County ranked 20th out of North Carolina's 100 counties in visitor expenditures in 2018.
