Man dies after truck hits home; 97-year-old woman asleep inside

A man is dead after his vehicle crashed into a home early this morning.

State troopers say it happened around 4:20 a.m. on Burgaw Highway near the intersection with Blue Creek Road in Onslow County.

1st Sgt. David Oglesby says 56-year-old Thomas Malpass was having a medical issue and driving to the hospital. They say his 19-year-old wife was a passenger.

The truck ran off the left side of the road, struck a ditch and then hit the home.

Malpass died at the scene, while the wife was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Family members say their 97-year-old mother was asleep at the time, but wasn't not hurt by the crash. The bedrooms are in the back of the home.

The impact caused significant damage to the home's brick foundation.

The Highway Patrol says the man's death is going to be ruled as a medical condition fatality.
