Longtime Craven County Sheriff loses reelection bid

CRAVEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) Longtime Craven County Sheriff Jerry Monette has lost his bid for reelection.

Monette, a Democrat, has been sheriff for 24-years.

He lost to Republican Chip Hughes.

Hughes had 19,302 votes compared to 16, 069 for Monette

Hughes is a former military member and Highway Patrol Officer with over 30 years of law enforcement background.

Hughes said if he won he wanted to focus on the opioid epidemic, along with school safety.

Hughes ran against Monette in 2014 and the two were separated by just half a percent.
