Local runner takes on 48-hour treadmill challenge for Alzheimer's research

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - While many are out running around for last minute gifts, one man has literally strapped on his sneakers and raced against time for the last 48 hours.

John Caracoglia is a local Ultra runner, which means he runs distances longer than the 26.2 miles of a marathon.

This weekend he decided to take on a 48-hour Treadmill Challenge to raise money for Alzheimer's research.

In partnership with Fleet Feet in Greenville, Caracoglia set up a treadmill outside the store Friday and was on his feet until 3 p.m. Sunday. He only took short breaks to eat and sleep.

In that time Caracoglia ran 128 miles.

The runner has been raising money for the Alzheimer's Research Foundation since the beginning of the month and so far has collected $2,700.

This is a cause that is close to Caracoglia's heart, because his grandmother died from Alzheimer's in 2011.

Caracoglia will continue raising money until Dec. 31.
