Lenoir County Schools bus drivers participate in competition

KINSTON, NC (WITN) The school bus drivers for one public school system in the east jump started a statewide competition on Friday to determine who has the slickest wheels in the state.

Lenoir County Schools bus drivers competed in the annual school bus rodeo in Kinston.

The district event, which is the first stage of the statewide battle, saw 20 drivers in total compete.

The drivers are judged by a panel from the Department of Motor Vehicles and individuals who train bus drivers.

They're scored on a variety of obstacles including maneuverability, and backing up.

When all the scores were tallied, Elaine Harper stood above the rest.

Harper said, "Very excited, very excited. I didn't know I had won. Very excited. I take my job very seriously, very seriously. I drive the EC bus at Banks Elementary and I take my job very seriously."

Harper scored a 174 out of 200 on her test.

She and the second place winner will now have the opportunity to compete at the regional competition in Fayetteville in April.
