CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WITN) - An Eastern Carolina high school is closed today after a fire last night.
The fire at Lejeune High School was reported around 6:00 p.m. Thursday.
Authorities say the fire appears to have started in an electrical closet above the band room and it eventually burned through a section of the roof.
Several people inside the school were safely evacuated as both Camp Lejeune and Jacksonville fire departments put out the fire.
The base says the high school roof and the electrical room received fire damage, while there was water damage in several rooms when sprinklers were triggered. Those include the auditorium, a theater classroom and the band classroom.
Camp Lejeune Schools says the high school will undergo a comprehensive health inspection to determine what restoration steps are necessary so students can safely return.
