NEW BERN, NC (WITN) Communities around the country, and here in the east, are rallying behind their police departments in an effort to thank them for all of their hard work.
Wednesday is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
Police officers are sworn to protect and serve our communities each and every day, they have many different roles including getting to know residents and patrolling the halls of schools.
Officers we spoke to all had the same thing to say when it came to why they would choose such a challenging career.
Captain Bobby Jones with the New Bern Police Department said, "We are all like a family and we get a long really well, but I think the true satisfaction and I think most police officers will tell you this, it's the ability to help the community. I think that's what we enjoy the most."
Law Enforcement Appreciation Day has been held on January 9th each since since 2015.
