GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) - Walter B Jones Junior and his father represented Eastern Carolina in Congress for a combined 50 years.
Walter B. Jones Senior was elected to Congress in 1966 and represented the East until 1992. In 1995, Walter B. Jones Junior was elected to the 3rd District seat and served for the last 24 years.
ECU Political Science Professor Carmine Scavo knew Jones Junior personally and professionally.
Scavo said it's very unusual to see such family dominance of a congressional district, and says it's hard to predict who will fill the now vacant seat. "It's sort of the end of a dynasty here, and it's going to be interesting to see who steps forward to take up the mantle. There are several people who have been talked about as Republican candidates. There's not really very many who've been talked about as Democratic candidates, but it's just going to be interesting to which way the district goes," said Scavo.
Scavo said Jones was known for supporting the military, and for voting his conscience, and not along party lines.
