Inmate dies after fight at Maury Correctional Institution

GREENE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Officials say an inmate has died after a fight at a state prison in the east.

The Department of Public Safety says William Walls, 72, was struck during a fight at Maury Correctional Institution Monday night.

He was found unresponsive and pronounced dead after unsuccessful resuscitation efforts.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office and SBI are now investigating.

Walls was convicted of second degree murder in Rockingham County in 1979 and was serving a life sentence.
