Visitor evacuation order lifted on Ocracoke Island

OCRACOKE, N.C. (WITN)- Hyde County says it will allow visitors back onto hurricane ravaged Ocracoke Island Monday.

Commissioners voted to lift the visitor evacuation order on December 2nd. The order has been in place since Hurricane Dorian badly damaged the island back in early September.

Commissioners had originally voted to lift the evacuation order on November 22nd or following the reopening of NC 12, but that recommendation was changed following this past weekend's coastal storm that damaged NC 12.

The December 2nd decision passed 4 to 1 with Commissioner James Topping voting against.

Officials say lodging accommodations, food service, gas availability and other services are still limited.
