Hurricane victim plans to use $150k lottery prize for home repairs

ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - After winning the lottery on Monday, one woman says she'll use her prize money to repair her storm-damaged home.

Shirley Tolson says she'll use the nearly $106,000 she pocketed from a scratch-off prize for repairs after her roof and chimney were damaged by Hurricane Florence in September. Her home was also damaged by Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

Tolson, who is a tax accountant, bought the $5 scratch-off ticket at a pawn shop in Red Springs. She says she rarely plays the lottery, but took a chance on an impulse.

She ended up winning $150,000 and will take home about $106,000 after taxes.
