High bacteria levels prompt alert for swimmers on Radio Island and Town Creek

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (WITN) - As the weather heats up, there is an alert out for people just ahead of swimming in two Eastern Carolina locations. The locations have tested positive for high levels of bacteria.

The first alert was issued for the public beach access off Marine Drive on Radio Island; while the other is located at the North Side of the mouth of Town Creek.

The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries issued the alerts today, saying the samples they collected show bacteria that exceeds both the state and federal standards.

State officials tested the sites again Tuesday and say if the levels remain high, they will post a swimming advisory sign and issue warnings.
