East Carolina University's winningest women's basketball coach has resigned after a review of the program by the athletics department's office of compliance.

Heather Macy has been head women's coach since April 2010 and is resigning immediately.

"I regret that my misunderstanding about practice rules has led to this end, but I have chosen to resign in order to save the University and the team from any unnecessary distractions," Macy said.

The resignation comes just two weeks before the season opener.

Macy compiled a 134-117 record in her eight seasons leading the Pirates. The university says she will be reassigned within the athletics department until she leaves ECU on December 17th.
