Healthy Habits: Managing diabetes during the holidays
National Diabetes Awareness Month is approaching. So are the holidays.
Susan Houston, a lifestyle coach with Vidant Health, says the holidays can be a challenging time for those with diabetes and pre-diabetes.
Houston came on WITN News at Sunrise Tuesday to talk about managing your diabetes while being surrounded by tempting food.
Houston suggests bringing your own dish and drink to holiday gatherings. She suggests something like lemon water to avoid a carb and sugar-heavy drink.
As for a dish, she suggests bringing something heavy in vegetables, which could be an alternative to something meat based. She says this dish provides a lot of good nutrients and can help you feel your best.
Houston says sweets are okay, as long as it is in moderation.
If sweets are an absolute must for you during your holiday routine, she says you can substitute carbs for a treat instead. She says reading labels and ensuring you stay within your daily value can enable you to eat the things you love.
