CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern is asking students in several school districts to help create an educational campaign to tackle hand hygiene.

All over the walls of CarolinaEast, there are small signs reminding you to wash you hands and use sanitizer to stop the spread of germs, but it's who created them that has the hospital excited.

Infection and Prevention Manager Cathy Fischer said, "Their artwork will be displayed throughout the Hospital you'll see them probably at elevators and along the hallways, and they are also over the hand sanitizer dispensers you'll see miniature posters."

For the second year, hospital employees have asked for help creating new signs regarding hand hygiene and they've made it into a contest.

"When we sent out the challenge to do a hand hygiene it was like oh wow this could be a class lesson, we can have a lot of fun with it and they already wanted to know what they wanted to do so it's great," said Fischer.

The contest is open to public schools in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties and there is a category for elementary, middle, and high school.

Lisa Connell is a Visual Arts Teacher and said when they got the contest information, she encouraged student creativity. "I let the students use their IPad's for research information about hand washing and safety protocols with you know germs and stuff and then they just designed their own posters," she said.

Up to ten entries are allowed per class and the winning classroom will earn $500 dollars. Teachers are already thinking about how they could spend the money.

Connell said, "We would get some new art supplies and it would help pay for my field trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art for my eighth graders and for incentive for the students to do well I told them that the top ten that were selected if we won I would give them each 20 dollars of that money."

CarolinaEast hospital officials are accepting entries this week, and will pick them up for judging on Thursday and Friday.

Monday, April 1st, winners will be chosen. Ten $500 Dollar prizes will be given out to the winners.
