HIGHWAY PATROL: Man shot at after pointing gun at state trooper

SAMPSON COUNTY, NC (WITN) - A state trooper is on administrative duty after shooting at a man who pointed a gun at him.

Richard Lane, 35, of Goldsboro, wasn't hit by the gunfire but was treated at the scene for minor injuries from broken glass.

The Highway Patrol says Trooper J.F. Smith stopped to check on an SUV that was parked on the shoulder of I-40 in Sampson County.

They say after Lane pointed a gun at the trooper, Trooper Smith fired his weapon three times, only striking the man's vehicle.

Lane was charged with assault by pointing a gun on a government official and unsealed wine/liquor in the passenger area. He was given a $10,000 bond.

Trooper Smith has been with the Highway Patrol for the past five years and is assigned to Sampson County.
