Grilling safety ahead of holiday weekend

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) The summer weather is here and Memorial Day is quickly approaching which means many of us are thinking about firing up the grills, but before you do, Greenville Fire and Rescue has some safety information to keep in mind.

Officials say make sure to inspect your grill and make sure there are no propane leaks if you use a propane-fueled grill.

They also say it is important to keep your grill clean and thoroughly clean it before you use it.

If you use a metal brush to clean it, make sure bristles don't get stuck on the actual grill, as they could end up in your food.

Keep the grill at least ten feet from the house or overhanging branches and never leave a grill unattended.

Also, never use your grill inside and keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.

If you use a charcoal grill only use charcoal starter fluid.

When you finish grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing of them into a metal container.
