A Greenville woman is dead from an apparent drowning Tuesday night in the Tar River.

North Carolina Wildlife says the body of 51-year-old Karen Culley was pulled from the river around 8:00 p.m. on the Pitt County side of the Pitt-Beaufort county line.

Sgt. William Cain says Culley was on a boat with another person. He said they don't want to release many more details about what happened as it is still under investigation.

The woman's body was found about a half hour after the first call by two good Samaritans who happened to be going by on their boat. Cain says the body was not far from where she was reportedly last seen.

In addition to wildlife officers, Pitt County deputies, Beaufort County deputies, and Washington Fire-EMS assisted with the search.
