Greenville substitute teacher wins $1 million lottery prize days before 64th birthday

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) - A Greenville substitute teacher got the greatest birthday present she could ask for.

Phyllis Moss from Greenville won a $1 million lottery prize just days before her 64th birthday.

“A friend of mine told me something wonderful was going to happen on my birthday this year. I never believed it would be this. It’s an extra reason to celebrate. Wow! Just wow," said Moss.

Moss bought a $1 million Win It All scratch-off ticket at the Duck Thru Food Store on Greenville Boulevard.

When she found out she won, she says she started crying tears of joy. “I immediately called my fiancé and told him, ‘You need to pick me up. I can’t drive. I can’t drive. I’m shaking so much," said Moss.

She claimed her winning prize at the Raleigh lottery headquarters Wednesday. Moss chose a lump sum payment of $600,000 and walked away with $424,503 after taxes. She says she plans to use some of the money to pay bills and help her family.

She is the first player to win a top $1 million prize playing the new game. There are still three top prizes remaining.
