GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) Thousands of local kids are learning how to handle emergencies and keep themselves safe.
Firefighters in Greenville have been meeting with schools and daycare locations across the city in recognition of Fire Prevention Month.
Kids get to see a firefighter in full turn out gear so they learn not to be scared if a firefighter attempts to help them.
They also learned how to identify exits and crawl beneath smoke to get out of a fire.
Staff also taught them how to call 911 and how to recognize when a situation is an emergency.
Greenville firefighter Caysie Capano says, "I find it a wonderful experience that we can actually reach out to the kids and make that they're safe and that they understand that we're there to help."
The education campaign will continue throughout the rest of this month.
