Greenville Fire-Rescue installing free smoke alarms

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Firefighters are installing free smoke alarms in one Eastern Carolina city.

Greenville Fire-Rescue says they will come to your home if you live in the city and install a smoke alarm for free to prevent house fires.

The fire department says they've seen a spike in cooking-related fires in Greenville recently.

Just last week, 26 people were displaced in a fire at The District at Tar River apartments on 1st Street. Crews say the fire started in the kitchen because someone left food cooking unattended.

In addition to installing free smoke alarms, firefighters are reminding everyone to stay in the room when cooking on a stove-top and to set timers to remind you when something is cooking.

You can get your smoke alarm installed by giving the fire department a call at (252) 329-4390.

If you don't live in Greenville, you might want to check with your own fire department as several participate in similar programs.
