Golf tournament raises money for women's homeless shelter in Carteret County

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) - More than 80 golfers took a swing at the Morehead City Country Club course, all to benefit Hope Mission's Women's Homeless Shelter.

It's the only homeless women's shelter in Carteret County. Currently, the group can house six women at a time.

The shelter opened back in February and officials with Hope Mission say this event will help ensure they can continue helping women get back on their feet.

"We're in the transitioning business we help homeless folks transition to being self-supportive members of the community so that means we don't just provide the housing element but we help with jobs and transportation," says Gene McLendon, the Hope Mission executive director.

Hope Mission says the money raised Thursday will go right back to funding the women's side of their homeless shelter.
