POLICE: Goldsboro man hears intruder, shoots and kills mother

GOLDSBORO, NC (WITN) - A Goldsboro man has been charged with murder after police say he shot his mother early this morning.

Police say they got the call around 3:20 a.m. to a home on Wilmington Avenue. They found 49-year-old Sonya Darden dead in the home.

Shontionne Darden, 31, told police he thought he heard an intruder coming into the house and fired a shot into the hallway. The shot struck and killed his mother.

Darden has been charged with second degree murder and felony possession of a firearm by a felon.

He was jailed on a secured bond and will go before a judge on Monday.

A check shows that Darden has a lengthy criminal record, dating back to 2002. Convictions include assault of a government officer, drug possession, assault on a female, and common law robbery.

The Goldsboro Police Department says they are investigating after a 49 year old woman died from an apparent gunshot wound Friday.

Officers say they responded to 306 Wilmington Avenue on Friday to a report of shots fired.

When they got there, they located 49 year old Sonya Yvonne Darden suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police say when EMS arrived on scene, they pronounced her dead.

We're told Darden is listed as a resident of the home where she was found.
