ROCKY MOUNT, NC (WITN) - The Golden Leaf Foundation has named a new president after its previous leader accepted a position as interim chancellor of ECU.
The foundation's board of directors selected Scott Hamilton as the organization's third president. Hamilton takes over the position after former president Dan Gerlach.
Hamilton was previously the Executive Director of the Appalachian Regional Commission, which works to strengthen economic growth in Appalachia. He is from Hendersonville and a UNC-Greensboro graduate.
The foundation has awarded more than 1,700 grants totaling over $870 million in its 20 year history. The nonprofit was established in 1999 to receive part of the state's funding from a 1998 settlement agreement with cigarette manufacturers.
Its grants are awarded to tobacco-dependent, economy distressed and rural areas of North Carolina.
