As the mercury continues to rise nationwide, so does the price of gas here in Eastern North Carolina.

According to GasBuddy, the national average for a gallon of gas is $2.86, which is up 5.7 cents compared to one week ago. North Carolina's average falls below that level, at $2.71 per gallon. That's a 3.7 cent increase per gallon compared to last week.

Gas prices right now are 53 cents higher than they were the same time last year. By comparison though, the average price of gas during this time of year in 2013 was $3.42 per gallon.

Analysts say the gas prices nationwide are close to hitting $3 per gallon for the first time since 2014, when it averaged $3.62.
