HAVELOCK, NC (WITN) - Part of a major Eastern Carolina highway was shut down for hours today because of a natural gas leak.
A Havelock spokeswoman says U.S. 70 westbound lanes near Walmart reopened around 3:30 p.m.
She said a construction crew working in the area damaged a Piedmont Natural Gas underground line.
We're told police shifted eastbound traffic onto the service road, while one lane of westbound traffic is now on the eastbound side of the highway. Even with that drivers experienced major backups.
The leak began around noon.
Piedmont spokeswoman Jennifer Sharpe says a 3/4 inch service line was hit. She said the contractor doing work in the area had requested underground utility lines be marked, but didn't wait for that to happen and began work anyway.
There were no injuries and Sharpe said the only customer without natural gas was the nearby Wendy's.
