NEW BERN, NC (WITN) Among the Hurricane Florence recovery efforts throughout Craven County, one local gas station in downtown New Bern officially re-opened its pumps this week for the first time since the storm.
The Galley Store located on East Front Street operated without fuel for nearly six months since the storm.
Owner Kelli Billingsley says due to flooding during the storm, water made its way into two of their fuel tanks.
In addition to working with the Department of Agriculture to clear all traces of water in those tanks, each of their six pumps had to be repaired.
But now that they're back up and running, they hope to rebound from the lost revenue. Billingsley says, "This winter has been really tough, but thankfully, at least in some capacity, we had some insurance which has been super helpful while our pumps have been down. But now that they're back up, hopefully that will give us a little shot in the arm."
Billingsley says not only did they lose revenue from fuel sales, but convenience store sales decreased by 50% while their pumps were down.
