Police say the review of an officer's body camera has led to his arrest and suspension of police powers.

Officer Alec Smith has been charged with misdemeanor larceny this afternoon.

Police say Smith, a two year veteran of the department, was one of the officers who were called November 5th to the Rodeway Inn on Greenville Boulevard to investigate drug activity. Officers got the okay to search the man's vehicle and motel room and no evidence of any drug activity was found.

Police say later that night, the man reported that $60 was stolen from his vehicle. All of the officers there during the search were wearing body cameras, and police say Smith was developed as a suspect after that video was reviewed.

The 23-year-old Smith has been placed on administrative leave without pay and his police powers were suspended.

"The arrest of Officer Smith sends a clear message that no one is above the law," said Chief Mark Holtzman in a statement. "The Greenville Police Department holds itself highly accountable to the laws that govern each and every one of us."
