RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Voters in Tuesday's Republican primary runoff in eastern North Carolina will decide on a candidate to succeed the late Rep. Walter Jones Jr.
The campaign between urologist Greg Murphy of Greenville and Kinston pediatrician Joan Perry has largely been about who can best carry the conservative mantle for the 3rd Congressional District. The winner advances to the September general election.
While the two candidates have very similar platforms, the runoff has evolved into a battle among Washington-based political expenditure committees and well-known Republican lawmakers seeking to fashion candidate differences to sway voters.
Murphy got the most votes among 17 GOP candidates in the April primary, but failed to get enough to win outright.
