RICHLANDS, ONSLOW COUNTY (WITN) Students at one school here in the east need a new gym and officials say they’re still short up to $300,000 for the $1 million project.
Students at Liberty Christian Academy in Richlands often have gym class outside, but the weather doesn’t always allow for it. That’s just one instance where they run out of space for physical education.
“If it's bad weather we don't really have a space," said athletic director Adam Grayson.
School officials say their multipurpose room is the closest thing they have to a gym, but it serves eight other daily purposes. They’re have to squeeze more and more students in each year.
“Every year it's gotten a little bit tighter and tighter,” added Grayson, referring to the indoor space.
The multipurpose room isn’t usable for most sports, such as volleyball and basketball, which need a marked gym floor. Athletes, as along with the rest of the students, will benefit from the new gym.
Fundraising plans are in the works and officials say if the money comes in they hope the new gym will be open for next school year.
