A former Marine got prison time for killing his roommate more than six years ago in a case that first was ruled an accidental self-inflicted shooting.

Tyler Prudden was given 14 to 26 months in prison after previously pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Prudden was arrested back in 2016 for the death of Lanija Gilpatrick, who was also a Marine.

In 2013, deputies responded to a home on Dalton Court outside of Richlands for a man who had accidentally shot himself. Gilpatrick died a few days later and initially his death was ruled an accident.

A tip three years later prompted deputies to reopen the case and Prudden was charged.

Prudden had a clean criminal record, and could have received probation in the case. An assistant district attorney said getting prison time was a relatively heavy sentence for this case.
