Field getting crowded as Pitt County sheriff yet to announce re-election plans

PITT COUNTY, NC (WITN) - There are questions whether Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks will seek a third term as two of his high ranking deputies say they're now running for sheriff.

Dance / Williams / Weaver

Captain Tony Williams announced this morning that he will run as a Democrat in the upcoming election.

Williams has 22 years of experience in law enforcement. He is taking leave time as captain of investigations to run for sheriff

WITN has also confirmed that Major Paula Dance will seek the Democratic nomination as well. Dance is the third highest ranking law enforcement officer within the sheriff's office.

Elks had previously told WITN that it was his intent to serve two terms as sheriff.

When asked this morning about Sheriff Elks, Williams says he has "waited and waited" for Elks to make a decision. "If he (Sheriff Elks) decides to run, I will support him," Williams told us.

On the Republican side, retired Highway Patrol Sgt. Gary Weaver says he is also running for sheriff.
