Not only was Monday the first day of classes for East Carolina University students, but it was also the start of new Chancellor Cecil Staton's first semester.
Dozens of alumni and friends of ECU welcomed Chancellor Cecil Staton and his wife Catherine to the Pirate community during a welcome event Monday night.
Alumni, local officials and ECU board members gathered in the Murphy Center to welcome Chancellor Staton, who became East Carolina University's 11th chancellor back on July 1st.
Staton says one of the reasons he was drawn to ECU was because of the strong community behind it.
Staton says, "My job is really to be the chief cheerleader for ECU and that is what I intend to do. We are going to really work to take this university to where I think the trajectory is going to lead it and I think it is going to be a more prominent national university in our country."
Chancellor Staton says his mission is to focus on student success, public service and regional transformation.
He says they recently launched a new program to improve the branding of ECU and maximize marketing efforts to push the university to the next level.
