EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WITN) - A special education teacher from Eastern Carolina won it big on his 18th wedding anniversary.
William Scott, of Emerald Isle, captured a $1.1 million Cash 5 jackpot that was bought at the Coastal Mart in Emerald Isle this past weekend.
Scott teaches at Queens Creek Elementary School in Onslow County.
It wasn’t until Monday that he checked his ticket after his wife told him someone bought a winning ticket at the store.
“I thought, ‘What are the odds that this could be me?’” Scott said. “Then she said the ticket was sold at the Coastal Mart. I thought, ‘Wait. This really could be me.’ When I checked the numbers and saw that I had the winning ticket I couldn’t believe it.”
He claimed the winnings today in Raleigh. After the required state and federal tax withholdings, Scott took home $787,242 that he says he’ll use for retirement.
