WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - One Eastern Carolina county is boasting some of the lowest gas prices in the country as the cost to fill up continues to plummet nationwide.
The average price of gas in the United States is now about $2.30 but in Wayne County two gas stations are selling at $1.49.
One of those gas stations is the Speedway in Fremont where drivers like Robert Staton filled up Sunday.
"I haven't seen prices this cheap since I was a kid almost," said Staton.
According to GasBuddy.com the prices here are some of the lowest in the country, and the Dollar General in nearby Pikeville is matching those prices. That's bringing a lot of drivers to the pumps in the two towns.
"It makes a lot of difference," said Eureka Resident Camryn Tapp, "The cheaper the gas, the more you can put in."
Abbott Dees heard about the low prices in Pikeville from a Facebook post. He says he couldn't pass the chance to fill up here on his way to Maryland from Greenville.
"Just amazed that we aren't seeing this in Greenville," said Dees. "This is what, 50, 60 cent lower than Greenville."
The average price of gas has been dropping for the last three months. Experts say its because of falling crude oil costs.
"I don't know how long it's gonna last but I'm gonna enjoy it while it is here," said Staton.
The average gas price for all of North Carolina is about $2.09 a gallon. GasBuddy.com ranks Oklahoma as the state with the lowest average gas prices at $1.80 a gallon. The highest average is more than three dollars a gallon in the San Francisco Bay Area.
