East Carolina University held a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new Health Sciences Student Center Thursday afternoon.

ECU Chancellor Dr. Cecil Staton spoke during the presentation in front of the new 75,000 square foot facility.

University officials gave tours of the new building, which includes a recreation and wellness center, dining options and study rooms.

They say the facility, which is expected to open to students on May 1st, is the only stand alone student center on a health sciences campus in the entire state.

"This is about seven to 10 years in the making for getting this building to come to fruition," says Dr. Virginia Hardy, ECU's vice chancellor for student affairs. "It is a wonderful opportunity for our health sciences students to have a building where they can get some student services, get some recreation and an opportunity to actually meet each other from the different disciplines."

The building also includes a slide that goes from the third floor to the second floor.
