ECU residency match day

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) Friday was a big day for eastern Carolina medical students as a number of future doctors found out where they'll spend their next few years in training.

All medical school graduates throughout the country must complete a three to seven year residency before they can work independently as a doctor.

ECU says 100 percent of the students from Brody's class of 2019 who applied for residency programs got matched.

The National Residency Matching Program places applicants in various teaching hospitals across the nation.

A total of 73 graduates walked across the stage Friday.

Nearly eleven percent of the graduates will stay for their residencies at Vidant Medical Center and Brody's affiliated teaching hospital

Nearly 25 percent of Brody's graduating class will stay in residency programs in North Carolina.

About half of the students will go into primary care residencies.
