GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) - Researchers are diving deep to protect a piece of history.
ECU's Maritime Studies and Department of Biology program received a $29,652 from the National Park Service grant to study a sunken World War II aircraft found in the Pacific Ocean.
The wreckage is from the Battle of Saipan, which is said to be on of the most pivotal victories during the war.
Researchers will learn more about the aircraft and the underwater threats it may be exposed to.
They'll travel to Saipan in March to study the wreckage in person and present their findings to high schools overseas.
The goal is to ultimately help preserve this piece of history and other World War II artifacts.
