GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) With a little over a month left until the start of classes, construction continues on several projects at East Carolina University, and that was a topic of discussion as the ECU Board of Trustees met Thursday morning.
Construction of the new student center is on schedule and expected to open in January.
It'll have dining options like Starbucks, but with the dining area in the current student center closed, students will have to walk to the West End dining hall, or stop by a food truck in the fall.
Across campus, another construction project reached a milestone Thursday as ECU Trustees signed the final beam for the Dowdy Ficklen southside renovation.
ECU Chancellor Cecil Staton says, "It's hard to believe that literally four months ago, the first piece of steel was put into the ground and I think when our fans come back for the first games in September, they're gonna be in awe."
Stadium renovations will continue until May 2019.
The ECU Board of Trustees discussed these construction projects as they met for the finance and facilities committee meeting.
ECU Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Virginia Hardy, says, "Students are looking at universities in regards to what amenities they are having and that student center for us is going to play a major role, we think in recruitment but also in retention and student success."
The university also has other projects in the works. Construction on a new life science and bio technology building is set to start next July.
