ECU Police cancel alert; say man reported with gun comes forward

The man wanted for being seen on ECU's campus with a handgun has come forward and ECU Police Department says they have spoken with him.

Police say they do not believe there is a current threat to the public or students, but they do say the case will be thoroughly investigated.

Reports had come in that the man was seen with a holstered handgun Thursday afternoon in Bate Building.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the ECU Police at 252-328-6787. Information can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 252-758-7777.

ECU Police are investigating after social media reports that a man was seen on campus, in the Bate Building, with a holstered handgun Thursday afternoon.

The university sent out an alert.

The alert states a witness was located and reported that the sighting happened about 1 p.m. on the third floor of Bate.

The alert states the man did not threaten anyone with the handgun, which was holstered, and that the witness saw the gun when the man showed the gun to another man.

The man is described as white, with reddish hair and a beard, and that he was wearing a black rain jacket and a beige ball cap.

A criminal investigation is underway. Anyone with information is asked to contact the ECU Police Department at 252-328-6787. Information can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 252-758-7777.

According to the ECU website, the Bate Building contains classrooms, labs, and faculty offices for the College of Business, the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, the Business Education Department, and the Honors Program.
