GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) - The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina needs money to acquire more refrigerators to preserve donated fresh fruit, vegetables, and meats.
The group relies on used refrigerators from grocery chains and on grants to buy new refrigerators. They're seeking donations to get 25 to 30 refrigerators to food pantries in the region.
The produce will stay cool and last longer which they say means more healthy foods for people who need it.
Eastern Regional Director George Young said, "We do move a lot of canned goods, but we also have a great initiative moving forward to get a bigger percentage of fresh meat, vegetables, and fruits into the hands of families that are food insecure."
The organization's focus on fresh produce is expected to will give people more nutrients and vitamins in their diets.
