A shocking discovery for kids playing in the woods this past weekend in Pitt County--they found a dog tied to tree with no food or water.

The children were off Mayes Circle in the Pactolus community on Sunday evening when they heard whining and then saw the female terrier/pit bull mix.

Pitt County Animal Shelter Director Michele Whaley says the dog, which was severely emaciated and very weak, is possibly between one and two years old.

Whaley says Jennifer Matterly, who is with Friends of the Pitt County Animal Shelter, is fostering the dog and posted the pictures on social media, hoping to raise awareness on animal abuse. Matterly has named the dog Tanzie.

Pitt County Animal Services says without the help of the children, the dog most likely would not have survived much longer.

Animal Services has referred the case to the Pitt County Sheriff's Office for investigation.
